Latency in general terms is a measure of delay for a signal to travel to its destination and back.
Network monitoring tools, commonly referred to as network performance monitoring (NPM) solutions, are tools to test and measure multiple network health metrics. One of those is latency, which is commonly measured using Ping.
Ping is an Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) echo request packet that is sent from the NPM server and waits for an ICMP echo reply from the destination. In simple terms, ping is testing a connection between two network elements.
Ping measures the round-trip time (Ping RTT) for the request to reach the destination and for the response to return to the NPM server.
A number of factors impact latency, including distance, device, traffic, applications, or bandwidth. Latency is subjective, as high latency does not imply there is an issue. What is important is to detect unusual or unexpected increases to latency of devices or interfaces. The causes of increases are multifold:
- Distance: the further the destination system is from the source, the longer the Ping RTT.
- Device: overloaded resources such as the device already handling too many requests, can lead to latency, as can updates, malicious code, and poorly performed requests.
- Traffic: any significant increase in traffic across a network caused by a spike in use of video, streaming and VPN applications for example - could impact latency.
- Bandwidth: an unexpected change in bandwidth availability, whether across a network or between specific connections, can cause increased latency.
Multiple variables can affect latency so it's important to have the most accurate latency-related data for all critical devices and interfaces at your fingertips. From the device end, check statistics such as recent availability, Ping delay, interface usage and traffic volume, event records, and health metrics such as CPU, temperature, and memory load. If an interface issue, drill deeper into data such as configuration, utilization, traffic type, volume, flow rate, packet loss, errors, and discards to identify the cause.
